- <p> DIED. JIRI HAJEK, 80, Czechoslovakia's Foreign Minister during
- the doomed Prague Spring of 1968; in Prague. After the Soviets
- sent in tanks to crush the country's reformers, Hajek passionately
- denounced the invasion at the U.N. He later became a founding
- member--together with Vaclav Havel, now President of the Czech
- Republic--of Charter 77, the human-rights monitoring group.
- After the fall of the communists, he chose not to seek political
- office but remained active in human rights.
